Surprise!

Your partner is on the way, you have discussed playing with rope in the world of bondage and you want to surprise them with a sexy harness when they walk through the door.  Though bondage usually involves participation from riggers or other rope partners, some ties can be used alone to prepare for a spicy little evening.  So, what is the practice of self-tying and what should you know before you hop into the rope top and rope bottom positions?

What is Self Tying?

The practice of weaving rope or tying oneself into beautiful ropes creating harnesses, hip ties, or bounding ankles by oneself is a practice called Self Tie.  Bondage is a beautiful art so there is more than one reason that someone would want to practice solo.

Self-Expression & Rope Bondage

While one person may want to create a sultry, defining harness made of rope to take erotic pictures, others may want to prepare for a partner to let them know where their evening is headed.  There is also the possibility that one just wants to create art and admire their work, either way, self-tie is a great way to express yourself and your passion for your bondage and rope work.

Self Tie Essential Safety Tips

The first thing that needs to be taken into consideration when practicing self-tie is if there is no one else there precautions to avoid asphyxiation have to be taken.  Make sure to always avoid placing the rope on the head and neck area when engaging in bondage alone. Even though you can freely bind your head or neck with a rope, without the safety net of other people it is a risk that people need to avoid. A safer and common self-bondage area to try is breast bondage.  There are still risks with chest compression and attention must be paid to the amount of compression, but use the best judgment and look out for warning signs, and breast bondage can be safely practiced alone.  Chest compression can cause asphyxiation as well, so listen to your body.

Oxygen Deprivation

If there are any signs of oxygen deprivation remove the compression from the rope around your chest immediately -- there is no one there to cut you out if you pass out.  Don’t be afraid to use the medical scissors to cut the rope off if the symptoms of oxygen deprivation present themselves -- but always stay calm and try to control your breathing. Keeping emergency removal equipment close is the best practice when you are tied up.

Symptoms of Oxygen Deficiency

The most important thing to remember about a lack of oxygen is that it can affect motor control, so catch it early and act quickly and calmly.

Other signs and symptoms to look out for are:

  • Confusion

  • Shortness of breath

  • Rapid breathing

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Lightheadedness

  • Visual disturbances

  • Lack of coordination

  • Blueish tint to lips, ears, or nail beds

If any of these symptoms appear, release yourself from the rope immediately.  When practicing self-tie, one must listen to their body and make sure to take the precautions necessary to stay safe.

Self Tie Designs

Obviously, with this particular type of bondage, hands should remain free since the ability to free wrists from binds could be problematic, and having a free hand to release the rope is pretty crucial for safety -- though some consider this the downfall to self-tie.  However, this solo artist rope bondage does allow for elaborate harnesses, hip ties, and leg or ankle ties that leave hands free to be your own rope top.

Rewards of Self Tie

As mentioned before, self-tie gives you the ability to express yourself.  Deciding how we present our...assets is also a huge perk to this unaccompanied ritual.  The way we see our body is different than the way anyone else sees our body.  Though there is appreciation, beauty, and artistry in assisted rope bondage, self-tie gives control to the practitioner to find the beauty in themselves and accentuate it in a way that makes them feel phenomenally sexy.  Self-tie bondage can be incredibly empowering, not to mention a tantalizing surprise for anyone that gets to appreciate the seductive craftsmanship.  Whether you do this for yourself or for others to enjoy --  the rewards are powerful seeing yourself as provocatively tempting.

Wrapping up!

Of course, looking amazing and sexy in a self-tied harness for when your lover comes in is a great use for self-tying.  Partner participation isn’t required for self-tying though -- feel hot, tie yourself up in some beautiful Shibari rope and enjoy yourself -- however you chose to do so.  *wink*
